AND ADELIN JACKSON, THOMAS ANDREW
(ADDIE) MARGUERITE (NEE MCBURNEY)
Tom was born north of Battersea, Storrington, Frontenac County, ON. i n 1880. He was the son of Andrew Jackson and Martha Keeler. In 1892, h e came west with his parents, four brothers, and two sisters and the y settled in the Melgund district near Lauder on the NW of 35-4-24. I n 1898, Andrew and Martha rented (and later bought) the James Dempse y farm in Glenwood (NW 6-8-22) known then as the Dempsey Post office # 2 on the Griswold road 1 mile north of the nine mile comer. In 1998, a bout 140 members of the Jackson family celebrated one hundred years o n that farm, the reunion was hosted by Tom and Addie's grandson Ted Mu rphy and his wife Louise.
Tom and his elder brother John began working the farm here in the spri ng of 1898 and 1899. Then, Andrew and Martha and family moved up fro m Lauder and John went to university and Tom went farming on his own.
In 1905, Tom married Addie McBurney, daughter of Richard McBurney an d Priscilla Pettypiece of the Forbes district across on the north sid e of the river from Menteith elevator's later location. Addie was bor n at Teeswater, Kinloss Township, Bruce Co, ON in 1884, and came wes t in 1893 with her parents and nine siblings, leaving behind her eldes t sister Eliza, who married and stayed with her husband, Tom Hill on t he McBurney farm at Teeswater. Richard left Ontario because the lumbe r mill he owned and operated with a partner burned down and left the m with very little insurance.
Tom and Addie began their married life on what was known as the “Sharm an farm" (30-7-21 ) on the south side of the Souris river in the Botan y district. Their first three children were born there. They had fiv e children, four girls and one boy, Vera, Vida, Cecil, Verna and Marjo rie.
In 1913 Tom and Addie moved to the Whitefield district to the SW 6-8-2 2 where daughter Verna was born and one year later to the south 1/2 o f 31-7-22 where Marjorie was born. They stayed there till the spring o f 1919 when Tom sold it to George and Mary Miller and they moved nort h to the Andrew Jackson farm on NW 6-8-22 where he started and farme d there until retirement.
Although there were good years the Twenties also brought sorrow. Amon g the many hired men who worked for them was Donald MacDonald from Ale xandria, Glengarry Co. ON. He came following his discharge from the ar my in 1918 and remained until he signed up again in 1939.
In April 1928, son Cecil was crushed beneath the Fordson tractor ont o the plow and killed north of the buildings. That same summer Vida ma rried Joe Murphy and in February of 1929 she died, three weeks after t he birth of her son Ted. In the fall of that same year a two story lar ge granary and machine shed burned to the ground so fast one hired ma n (Cliff Burston) jumped from the second floor and Donald ran out of t he lower floor. This building held a large part of that years harves t plus most machinery and two cars. Besides this the depression was un derway and there was a new baby to look after as well.
In 1946, daughter Verna and her husband Art Pounder came to live wit h them and rented the Nick Swetlikoff farm in 1947. At which time gran dson Ted Murphy came to work also. In 1959. Tom and Addie rented the f arm to Ted and Louise and moved the small house to Souris where they r etired at 178 - 3rd Ave. West.
