Ted’s parents were Joseph Edwin Murphy, who came from St. Thomas, Onta rio, to leach school, first in Saskatchewan, then al Deleau and Lauder , MB. Joe was born in Detroit, Michigan, in 1897, of Canadian parents , who had crossed the border to find work. He returned to Canada, wit h his mother and only sister, in 1899, as an immigrant child. His pare nts were Michael Joseph Murphy and Anne Kilgallin.
Ted’s mother was Vida Muriel Jackson, born to Thomas Andrew Jackson an d Adeline Marguerite (Addie) McBurney, on Section 30-7-21 (Sharman Far m) on the south side of the river, in the Botany district, in 1909.
Ted was born on the NW of 6-8-22, in Glenwood, in 1929. Because his mo ther died three weeks later, he lived with his Jackson grandparents fo r 10 years and attended Whitefield school for 4 of those years. In Aug ust, 1939, he went to live in Winnipeg with his father and new stepmot her, Mary Deverell, daughter of Ambrose Deverell and Maude Herriot. Am by Deverell was a local Souris butcher who lived in the big house, o n the top of the hill, just west of the Mill Bridge.
Ted remained with his parents in Winnipeg and West Kildonan until 1946 , then went to Vancouver and worked on the CPR coastal ferries for on e year and returned to work for his grandfather, Tom Jackson, again i n the spring of 1947.
In 1950, Ted married Marie Louise Joyal of Souris, daughter of Clovi s ( Pete) Joyal and Agnes VanElslander, who farmed just southwest of S ouris. They came here in 1940, from St. Adolph, MB. Louise was born i n Winnipeg, in 1932, and therefore was 8 years old when she came to So uris. She attended school at St. Adolph and Souris.
Clovis (Pete) Joyal was the son of Omer Joyal and Ernestine Fontaine o f St. Agathe, MB. Louise’s mother, Agnes, was the daughter of Leon Van Elslander and Adeline Deblue, who had a farm and market garden south o f St. Norbert, MB. They both immigrated from Belgium, at the turn of t he century, and were married in St. Boniface, MB. Leon spent some wint ers in the Klondike when he first came.
In 1950, Ted and Louise built a small house on the Jackson farm on #2 1 Highway. Ted and Louise had six children there, two girls and four b oys. They were Jane, Patrick, Susan, Timothy, Christopher and Sean. Al l were born in Souris hospital, and delivered by Dr. Alf Grant.
In the big October snowstorm, in 1959, Tom and Addie Jackson moved th e smaller Murphy house to Souris, now 178-3rd Ave. West, and Ted and L ouise moved into the bigger Jackson house and rented the farm for thre e years, They bought it in 1962. Jane and Pat attended school in Delea u: Jane 3 years, Pat one. Following this, they all attended Souris sch ool and grew up on the farm.
When he was selling the farm to Ted, his grandfather warned him tha t a fellow could easily lose his shirt farming. In the fall of 1996, t hat literally happened. While unloading grain at harvest time, a set s crew on the grain elevator grabbed the back of his shirt and removed i t instantly.
Ted and Louise moved to Souris in 2000 to 197-7th Ave. West.

Cecil married Marie Louise Joyal, daughter of Clovis Joyal and Agnes Vanelslander, on 15 Apr 1950 2,36.,58 (Marie Louise Joyal was born on 16 Jul 1932 in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada 2,36,58,124 and died in Aug 2008 2.). The cause of her death was Pancreatic Cancer.
