bullet  General Notes:

Mary was born in Teeswater, Ontario. She left her home in 1893 when she was nineteen. Her family was moving out West to Manitoba. Within the next four to six years she moved to Peachland, B.C. with her Aunt Annie (McBurney) who was married to Leon McCall. While living in the Peachland-Vernon area she met and married Bert Smith (although it is possible they knew each other back in Manitoba). Bert Smith was born in Stonehaven, New Brunswick, May 1, 1874. He moved with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Richard B. Smith to Stonewall, Manitoba when a boy and to Peachland in 1898. He married Mary Jane McBurney of Peachland in Vernon B.C. November 14, 1899. They then moved to Vancouver, B.C. He came to Merritt in 1907 with his father who was interested in mining in the Nicola Valley. In 1908 Mary and their three children, Enid, Olive and Mabel joined him in Merritt. They came as far as Coutlee by train and finished the trip by horse and buggy as the railway stopped at Coutlee. Their three other children, Dick, Tootsie and Bob were born in Merritt. Most of their lives centred around the logging industry. They also owned a ranch very close to the town. Mary's youngest brother Russ and his wife May visited them in 1946. Their home was Menteith, Manitoba. Mary died at the age of 70 years after a lengthy illness. Both she and Bert are buried at The Cemetery, Merritt, They attended the United Church. 2,48
