Mary was born in Teeswater, Ontario. She left her home in 1893 when s he was nineteen. Her family was moving out West to Manitoba. Withi n the next four to six years she moved to Peachland, B.C. with her Aun t Annie (McBurney) who was married to Leon McCall. While living in th e Peachland-Vernon area she met and married Bert Smith (although it i s possible they knew each other back in Manitoba). Bert Smith was bor n in Stonehaven, New Brunswick, May 1, 1874. He moved with his parent s, Mr. and Mrs. Richard B. Smith to Stonewall, Manitoba when a boy an d to Peachland in 1898. He married Mary Jane McBurney of Peachland i n Vernon B.C. November 14, 1899. They then moved to Vancouver, B.C. H e came to Merritt in 1907 with his father who was interested in minin g in the Nicola Valley. In 1908 Mary and their three children, Enid, O live and Mabel joined him in Merritt. They came as far as Coutlee b y train and finished the trip by horse and buggy as the railway stoppe d at Coutlee. Their three other children, Dick, Tootsie and Bob wer e born in Merritt. Most of their lives centred around the logging indu stry. They also owned a ranch very close to the town. Mary's younges t brother Russ and his wife May visited them in 1946. Their home was M enteith, Manitoba. Mary died at the age of 70 years after a lengthy il lness. Both she and Bert are buried at The Cemetery, Merritt, They at tended the United Church.

Funeral Service was held Wednesday at 2:30 p.m.in Trinity Unite d Church for Robert Allan Smith who passed away Saturday afternoo n at the family residence, at the age of 83 years.
Rev. A. Rutherford officiated at the service and Mrs. K. Martin sa ng "The Old Rugged Cross" with Mrs. E. Orchard at the organ. Palbe arers were James Steffens, Rubert Steffens, John R. Steffens, Nels B rolin, Oliver Williams, and A. McNab. Internment was in Merritt Cemete ry with Merritt Funeral Chapel in charge.
Mr. Smith was one of the pioneer residents of Merritt, coming into th e valley in 19?? when the Diamond Vale Mine started operation and ha s been a highly respected citizen during the many years he lived here.
A brother of the late T. J. Smith of Vancouver, who was president of t he Diamond Vale Mine in Merritt, Mr. Smith was the manager of the Diam ond Vale Ranch, the present ??? Gardner property. At that time J. P. B oyd was manager of the Diamond Vale ???, and ??? Ransome was bookkeepe r. He has been retired for several years. He was born in Stonehaven, N ew Brunswick May 1, 1874. He moved with his parents Mr. and Mrs. Rich ard B. Smith to Stonewall, Manitoba as a boy and to Peachland in 1894 . He married Miss Mary Jane McBurney of Peachland in Vernon Novembe r 14, 1899, and moved to Vancouver.He came to Merritt in 1907 with hi s father who was interested in mining in the valley. In 1911 Mrs. Smi th and family joined him in Merritt coming as far as ??? by train an d finishing the trip by horse and buggy as the railroad stopped at ??? .
He is survived by three daughters, Mrs. Clark Jackson, Mrs. James Stef fens, and Mrs. John L. M. Curnow, and one son Richard A. McBurney of M erritt, and ten grandchildren. Mrs. Smith predeceased him March 11, 19 49, a son Robert died in
1949, and a daughter Mrs. Nels Brolin in 1950.
Out of town relatives who attended the funeral service were Mrs. Ken A quilon of South Burnaby, Mrs. A. Bristow of West Summerland, and Nel s Brolin of Prince George.
