David and Doris Wray
David John (Dave) Wray was born at Cartwright, Manitoba on January 31 , 1918. He is the eldest son of Lee and Mary Wray. He attended schoo l at Hazeldell and Cartwright. He drove a transfer for a few years, th en joined the R.C.A.F. in June 1942.
After his discharge in April 1945, he returned to Cartwright and bough t the local bakery from Harry Cox.
On March 10, 1946, Dave married Doris Ruth Gower of Snowflake, Manitob a. She was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Gower. Doris received h er education at Snowflake.
Dave and Doris sold their bakery business to Gordon Wray in 1948. Dav e was then employed by the R.M. of Roblin until 1953, when he went int o the Construction and gravel business, forming a partnership with hi s brothers Gary and Raymond. They operated this business as Wray’s Was hed Sand and Gravel until 1967.
Dave and Doris purchased the Pool Room and Barber Shop from Harold Ait ken in 1967. They sold this business to John Seeley in 1976.
Dave and Doris received employment with the Village of Cartwright, an d Doris also worked at the Cartwright school as a class supervisor fo r four years.
They are now retired.
Dave and Doris have four children: Gary Wayne, Darlene Gaye, David Gre gg and Randy Lee. They all received their education at Cartwright scho ol.
Gary Wayne was born January 13, 1947. After finishing school he went t o B.C. He works for the City Works Department in Vancouver. He marrie d Virginia Stein of Rolla, N.D. on March 22, 1974. They have three chi ldren: Michelle Dawn, an adopted daughter, born June 24, 1967, Melani e Ann was born August 1, 1976 and Amanda Nicole was born July 4, 1979.
Darlene Gaye was born July 20, 1949. She married Raymond Cavers of Cle arwater, Manitoba, on August 30, 1969. They have two sons: Curtis Shaw n born July 14,1970 and Christopher Shayne born May 23, 1974. Raymon d worked for the Cartwright Coop. for four and one-half years and is p resently employed by Al-Trans Trucking Co. in Winnipeg. They reside i n Cartwright. Gaye works as a librarian for the Cartwright Library.
David Gregg was born July 20, 1949. He married Lindsay Rennie of Killa rney, Manitoba, on October 10, 1970. They had two children: Derek Greg g born June 11, 1976 and Jacqueline Lindsay born December 12, 1978. Gr egg and Lindsay were divorced in April, 1982. On November 26, 1982 Gre gg married Suzanne Forest of Winnipeg. They live at Clandeboye, Man. H e is employed by the Lord Selkirk School Division as plumber and maint enance man. Suzanne is a school teacher.
Randy Lee was born February 24, 1954. He married Marie Holden of Delor aine, Manitoba, on October 22, 1977. They have two children: Holly Mar ie born October 5, 1978 and Jeremy Lee born November 16, 1982. Randy w orks at trucking and Marie is an X-Ray and Lab. technician at the Roc k Lake Health Centre in Crystal City, Manitoba.
Randy and Marie reside in Cartwright.

Mr. and Mrs. Lee Wray Sr.
Lee Roy Wray was born in Woodbridge, Ontario on June 1, 1888, the elde st son of John and Emma Wray. He came with his parents to Cartwright , Manitoba in 1891 and lived on the homestead in the East Mountain dis trict, where he attended school.
He married Mary Ann Menarey, daughter of John and Catherine Menarey, w ho was born on her parents’ homestead in the Hazeldell district on Dec ember 30, 1891. She attended school at Hazeldell.
After their marriage in 1913 they lived at Badger, Manitoba for a shor t time and then returned to Cartwright. In 1915 they moved to Holmfiel d, Manitoba, where Lee worked for Harrison’s Milling and Grain Company . He also did barbering. They moved to the Dave Duncan farm north of C artwright; they also lived on the Macklem farm and their grandmother M cMillan’s farm.

In 1934 they moved to Cartwright where Lee carried on a trucking busin ess. He was also fire chief and town constable. He was a member of th e Oddfellows Lodge. Lee was a lover of music and sang at many concert s and social functions. Mary was also talented musically.
Lee and Mary raised eleven children; their histories are included in t his book.
Lee passed away in 1953. Mary lives in their home and still keeps acti ve with her garden and flowers. She still plays the piano every evenin g, and enjoys reasonably good health. She is the last surviving membe r of the John Menarey family.
Her wonderful memory has been a real asset to the history book committ ee.
