MC BURNEY, JOSEPH AND CHRISTINA
Joe 1872 - 1950 Christina 1869-1952
Joe and Christina were married in 1902, in Kincardine, Ontario. They m oved to Brookdale, MB, where they farmed until 1910. They moved to th e Botany District, farming until 1938, when they moved to Souris. Thei r family consisted of Harry, Earl, Melville, and Muriel.
Henry (Harry) (1902-1987), farmed in the Botany District. Harry marrie d Catherine (nee Davidson) in 1927. Catherine is living in the Persona l Care Home in Souris in her 102nd year. Their children: Elva, Marjori e, and Murray.
Elva, born 1928, married Russ Morden in 1948. They farmed in Hartney a rea, then moved to Lauder, retiring to Treherne, MB. Their children ar e: Doreen, married Larry Petlinger, living in Portage la Prairie, MB , Donna, married Neil Marlin, living in Carman, MB. Rhonda and Kurt ar e living in Winnipeg, MB.
Marjorie, born 1934, is living in Red Deer, Alberta. She married Ron F lewelling (deceased). Their children are: Todd, living in Medicine Hat , Alberta and Jill, living in Denver, Colorado.
Murray, born 1937-1972, married Lorna (nee McFarlane). Their childre n are: Sherran, Dale, Scott, and Blaine. (See Lorna Hart History)
Earl, 1904-1965, married Edith Davidson in 1938. Earl moved to the Lil y District in 1937, onto 18-7-20. The first years the land was worke d with horses. Crops were cut with a binder, stooked and threshed. Fam ily and neighbours helped one another with stook teams and they hire d a threshing machine. Edith didn't have an easy task, feeding a larg e number of men, without running water or electricity, and three smal l children underfoot. One poor year, in the early 40s, it took nearl y all the proceeds from the crop to pay for the threshing. That year , we had to rely on cream checks and the sale of eggs, chickens, pig s and cattle to buy gas, groceries and clothing. In 1944, the first tr actor was purchased, a John Deere A. 1945 a Ford truck was bought fro m Loren Madill. Our first car was a 1925 Model T. Coupe.
Transportation in the winter was an open cutter, then a closed van. I t was a big undertaking for the whole family to go to Souris on Saturd ay. Dad would stoke up the stove in the van. We would leave at 10 a.m. , a two hour drive, and lunch at Grandma and Grandpa McBurneys. Afte r the shopping, and if weather and time permitted, the children ha d a slide down Victoria Park Hill. We might get a nickel to spend o n a treat at Mitchell's store. In those days it bought a sizable bag o f jaw breakers or jelly beans.
1948, was a turning point for many things. Hydro was turned on Novembe r 20, 1948. The hydro contract required you to buy 5 items. We had a n iron, toaster, kettle, hot plate and clock. Then we had a refrigerat or and a freezer.
Hydro was a tremendous help in the summer; not having to heat up the k itchen with the cook stove. We no longer had to hang the milk, cream a nd meat down the well. Our first combining was in 1948. We hired Ton y Kohut with a 21 Massey. In 1950 we bought our first combine from Har ry English.
The 50s and 60's were years of many changes, with much advancement i n all avenues of farming. With more land and bigger equipment, we wer e able to produce more crop and feed. Our family was growing up and aw ay at school. Eleanor, Bob and Ruth attended Lily School 1946-1959. Al bert and Viola Long picked us up with the horse and buggy in summer an d a closed van in winter.
Eleanor finished school in Brandon at St. Michaels Academy, and worke d with the Bank of Nova Scotia until her marriage to Wayne Gordon in 1 961. They have three sons, Barry, Bryan and Brent. (Sec Gordon History ).
Bob went to school in Souris after Grade 9 at Lily. He farmed with hi s Dad. After Earl passed away in 1965, he took over the farm. Bob marr ied Marlene Swan in 1968. Their children: Warren (Kim), sons Shane 5 , and Trent 3, live in Portage La Prairie, MB, Shauna (Alex), son, Pre ston live in Swift Current, SK.
Ruth (Wayne Smith ) finished her schooling at Souris and started wor k at the Royal Bank. She married Douglas Kerslake in 1964, and they fa rmed on the Kerslake farm until they purchased the Shell Bulk Dealersh ip in Souris, in 1967. Doug passed away accidentally in 1972. Ruth sta rted working at the Souris Credit Union (now Westoba Credit Union) i n 1975, and is still employed with them. They have 3 children: Kare n ( Roger) Dufault was born in 1966. She took her schooling in Souri s and her Education degree at Brandon University and continues to teac h in Ignace, Ontario. Karen and Roger have 2 children - Jared 1994 an d Alexandria 1997. Lisa (Doug) Morley born 1969 is living in Winnipeg . She took her schooling in Souris and is a homemaker and works part t ime in Zellers. Lisa and Doug have 4 children - Nickolas 1989, Dylon 1 991, Faith 2000 and Sean 2002. Douglas (Stacey) born 1972, lives in Ed son AB. He took his schooling in Souris and Crocus Plains School in Br andon. He is a manager of a maintenance shop for Stinger wells. Doug a nd Stacey have 3 children - Jamie-Lynn 1995, Ashley 1998 and Hailey 20 01.
Melville (Mel) 1906-1995. In 1936, he married Ethel (nee Nixon) 1914-2 003. They farmed in the Botany District, later moving to Millan Distri ct. They had 2 sons; Albert (Norma) and their son, Crispen, and Harve y (Peggy ) Beverly, Brenda, Margo and Jeff.
